I found different interpretations regarding the origin of the right element in 隣: 粦 : Multiple interpretations see the 米 as a corruption of 大, one sees the lower parts as drops of blood and interprets the character as "sacrifice victim", another sees a spirit surrounding a dead body and interprets it as will o' the wisp. There is also a disputed interpretation referenced in multiple places, that sees the character as a compound of 炎 and 舛. Conversely, EDHCC arrives at a similar conclusion but reading it in reverse : 炎 (flames) + 舛 (crossing legs) = will o' the wisp I'm not sure what to make of this, but EDHCC further interprets it as Chain of flames -> Repeated series, which makes sense to me when looking at characters like 鱗 (repeated pattern of scales) or 嶙 (mountain range) All 粦 based characters are read リン, except 憐 which is read レン
